Best Dressed: Met Gala 2024

The first Monday in May is one of my favorite days of the year. It’s Met Gala day! A day we get to see A-list celebrities and fashion icons don avant garde, haute couture pieces as they walk the most famous red carpet in the world – that which leads up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC into the newest Metrpolitan Museum fashion exhibit, followed by an extravgant fundraser most people will only ever dream of attending. It’s fashions biggest night. A chance for designers to follow a theme and bring epics designs to life.

This years museum exhibit is titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which examines how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again. However the dress code for the gala was The Garden of Time. The theme stemmed from a J.G. Ballard story about a count who—to stave off an angry mob nearing his castle—cuts a rose from his garden to slow down time until there are no flowers remaining. It’s not as literal as the name, therefor interpretations ranged from flowery ensembles to dark and moody ones. Based on the theme and who told that story best, here are my picks for best dressed at the 2024 Met Gala! Who made your list?

Mindy Kaling in Guarav Gupta
Mona Patel in Iris van Herpen (the sleeves fluttered open via mechanical technology)
Lana Del Rey in Alexander McQueen
Elle Fanning in Balmain and Cartier jewelry
Lil Nas X in Luar
Taylor Russell in Loewe and Fred Leighton jewelry
Alia Bhatt in Sabyasachi
Sydney Sweeney in Miu Miu
Zendaya in Maison Margiela by John Galliano

For the very first time, Swarovski shone on the Met Gala red carpet with five one-of-a-kind couture looks. To this year’s dress code “The Garden of Time”, Swarovski Global Creative Director Giovanna Engelbert, responded with ensembles inspired by elements of nature. She was in green (Nature), accompanied by Karlie Kloss (pink-Flower), Anok Yai (blue-Water), Irina Shayk (silver-Air) and Imaan Hammam (gold-Sun).

You may not have received an invite to the Met Gala, but you can certainly still visit the Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion exhbibit at the Met. You might get to see some past best dressed list fashions in person!
