Spooky Season in LA: 5 Best Halloween Activities

Halloween is drawing near and the ghosts and goblins are out there should you wish to seek them. Here are the 5 best Halloween activities you don’t want to miss in Los Angeles. It’s your choice, will you enjoy a trick or a treat?

  1. Terrors of Tinseltown: Los Angeles has always been a town full of shining stars, where fame and fortune abound, but beneath the bright lights, a darker story often lurks. US Ghost Adventures takes you on a tour where you learn of the dreams of some of Hollywood’s icons and the nightmares that led to their demise. Laura was my guide on my walking tour in Hollywood and was frighteningly good. She had a lot of great historical items to share, entwined with fun facts and haunting tales. On this tour you can rent EMF Meters, which pick up on energy from the afterlife – and let me tell you, the meters were in the red zone a lot. Laura said she has had recent tours where guests have seen spirits in the photos they have taken of haunted places. Whether you go for the frights or the fantastic historical facts, you will be one happy boo or ghoul. US Ghost Adventures offers tours in many major US Cities.
  2. Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights: I’ll be honest, you won’t catch me here during the month of Halloween, when the goal of park employees is to entice thrills, chills and plenty of screams. A celebrity favorite for festive frights, Halloween Horror Nights, allows visitors to experience several film and TV themed haunted houses. I had a chance to do a walkthrough of one of the haunted houses before the festivities began, and I am not ashamed to admit the although the lights were on and no ghosts or goblins were in the space, somehow, I managed to scream. And what made me scream, you ask? Don’t laugh when I tell you it was a regularly dressed staffer standing in a corner.
  3. Burbank Haunted Homes: If there is a place in Los Angeles where the biggest fans of fright night reside, it’s got to be Burbank, where you can wander street after street seeing over-the-top Halloween decorations. While the streets get crowded on Halloween night when the young (and young at heart) are trick-or-treating, these Halloween lovers deck their yards out early in October, so you can enjoy a drive-by or walkthrough any time you like. But of course, nighttime is the best when the monster mash is in all its glory. This map will help guide the way.
  4. The Ghosts of Old Hollywood Tour: This Halloween, Ghost City Tours invites guests to stroll along the iconic stars on the Walk of Fame to learn which of those with a star may still linger on Hollywood Boulevard. On this tour, you explore the lore of legendary theaters and hotels where history and hauntings collide. As Ghost City Tours states, “It’s a chilling backstage pass to the paranormal side of Tinseltown.” My guide Al was full of energy and knowledge and made a haunting correlation, stating “In this town, you can go from zero to hero and back again in 5 seconds.” This tour gave us a look into some of those who had fame and lost their fortunes (and their lives). Al also claimed that just like in life, in the afterworld, there are two types of ghosts, those who burn the midnight oil and those who wish to be seen and socialize. Marilyn Monroe continues to make her mark on Hollywood, and is often talked about on the tour, and definitely falls in the category of social ghosts, often appearing in a famous mirror in the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel. Ghost City Tours offers tours in many major US cities throughout the entire year.
  5. Knott’s Scary Farm: Knott’s Berry Farm has been delighting adventure seekers since 1940, when Walter Knott turned land that he was farming into a themed “Ghost Town.” In the decades since, the park has grown to offer thrill rides, live entertainment and a water park. Knotts Berry Farm is a fantastic theme park year-round, with many different themed areas, but Walter’s original Ghost Town comes back to life during Halloween when Knott’s Scary Farm takes over the park. During this time of year guests not only get their thrills from rollercoasters but also from the frightening creatures who come out at night. In certain parts of the park you can test your scare tolerance as creatures roam among guests, and if you find your fright level quite high, you can then venture into one of the parks haunted houses for more spooky fun. Knott’s Scary Farm is the longest-running Halloween theme park event in Southern California. With over 50 years of nightmares, unimaginable scares and innovative thrills, “Knott’s Scary Farm has left no tomb unearthed, no crypt un-rattled and no fear untouched.” Six Flags Entertainment Corporation runs Knott’s Berry Farm, as well as similar parks across the country, many of which have Halloween festivities that rival Knott’s Scary Farm. The two I recommend are HalloWeekends at Ohio’s Cedar Point and Fright Fest at Six Flags Great America in Illinois.

Happy Haunting!
