Dream’s From a 1950’s Housewife

I often think about how amazing it would have been to have lived in another era. There are so many decades I would want to spend time in, for so many different reasons. The 1920’s and 30’s for fashion, the 1940’s for the jazz and big band music, the 1950’s for the dressed to impress-cookie cutter lifestyle, the 1960’s for mid century modern furnishings and the 1970’s for disco parties. Out of all of those though, I would have to say the decor of the 50’s and 60’s has always stood out to me. Maybe because I grew up with parents who collected and restored old cars and other antiques, maybe because the colors and styles were so new and refreshing, or maybe because I love interior design and that was such an exciting time for it. I have always loved incorporating old world charm into home decor. It’s so cozy to mix the old with the new.

When I was introduced to the brand Big Chill I started dreaming of how I would incorporate their amazing pieces into my dream kitchen…which I will one day have. I mean come on, anyone can have a stainless steel fridge or stove, but not everyone is bold enough to have a pink or green one. I would dare to do it though, and wanted to share with you some ideas I had floating around in my head!

It’s true for most people that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and it’s where people spend a good amount of their time. What’s one focal point you think of when you hear the word “kitchen.” Is it the refrigerator? That’s one I thought of right away. I’ve always thought it’s a little sad how far we have strayed from the classic designs of past eras. Think about refrigerators and other appliances from the 1950’s for example. How cool were they? They gave character to your home. Today, they usually just look like boxy items from outer space that landed in our kitchens. Check out this cool infographic Big Chill created showing the evolution of the refrigerator and see how it’s changed over time and how they are reviving (and keeping alive) the classic look, that I so love.
