Yellow – in the world of fashion, it’s either a color you love or hate. Or so you thought! These days, yellow doesn’t mean “loud” and “in your face.” Now, it’s tending to evoke more of a mellow yellow moment. From dresses to sweaters to accessories, it’s being incorporated into fashion as a peppy pop of color, and not the neon yellow we were used to in past decades. Whether you go for bold, all-over color (like I did here), or let is slide into your closet in funky patterns and prints, it’s a color that really does flatter almost all skin tones.
To be honest, I never thought I would be a person to advocate for wearing yellow. I have never loved the color in fashion, or in anything else really. But the current subtler shade, that’s more greenish-yellow, I see in stores today has caught my eye. Without even noticing it, I find myself gravitating towards it and have seen a rise on the yellow options in my own closet. It’s fun worn on it’s own, but also acts a neutral, than can be paired well with other bright colors. My comfy pants worn here have a busy pattern, that is less than subtle with the pop of yellow, but regardless, I didn’t let that keep me away from adding an equally colorful hair accessory!
With the purchase of this yellow headband, I learned something new. When I first put on this peppy yellow headband my first thought was of the song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree.” In my head I heard the fun, upbeat lyrics – or what I thought were the lyrics. When I actually googled the song, I realized the lyrics are about a person returning from prison and hoping their love leaves a welcome home sign in the form of a yellow ribbon tied on a tree. In 1979 a war hostages wife transformed the meaning, and instead decided to use a yellow ribbon tied around a tree as a way to silently and safely protest. Eventually it turned into a symbol to support our troops and welcome home soldiers. Who knew? Well, maybe if you knew the song well, you knew, but I was clueless. I love how a new accessory can turn into a little history lesson.
