I was not a fan of jeans as a kid, or any pant that caused itching or chaffing for that matter. I was always more comfortable in funky leggings and chunky sweaters – you know, the kind with baubles all over them. It probably wasn’t until my middle-school years that I started wearing jeans, and of course a big trend then was overalls. Once that trend ended, I thought that fad would never see the light of day again. Let’s be honest, they weren’t always the most flattering or stylish. But, it seems like I was wrong!
Overalls have definitely come back into the world of acceptable fashion. I say acceptable because they seem to be under mixed review. I think most people would still say “no way” to wearing them, but personally for the last couple years I have leaned towards “I think I like them.” Several months back during a work trip, I was in the mall getting exercise (it was cold and rainy – what was a girl to do), when I saw overalls in a store window that just called to me. They had the wash I had envisioned, and when I tried them on, they had the perfect fit too. So, I took a leap back in time and decided I would try the trend again!
I think the biggest thing about making overalls work in a modern day wardrobe is how you style them. One of the simplest and most classic ways to do this is with a plain white t-shirt. (A chunky white sweater would work too.) It’s an easy match color-wise and allows you to show more personality with your accessories.
To avoid looking liking a manly farmer, I decided to pair my overalls with lots of girly pink! Pink always makes me happy and it’s a fun pop of color in an otherwise neutral ensemble. When you think pink, remember it does not always have to mean “bold and in your face.” Blush pink is a wonderful and subtle way to wear pink, and it brings the pop without the punch.
For those of you already enjoying the adult overalls look, keep it up! For those of you who are on the fence, have I swayed you at all? Fashion is all about self-expression and that means wearing what makes you happy and confident. If overalls aren’t it, that’s okay. But, the blush accessories – well you have to love those no matter what, right?!
