Sometimes all you need is a new perspective. A different way of looking at life can change your mood, your views and so much more. There is no easier way to gain a new perspective than by slipping on a pair of sunglasses. They are one of my all time favorite accessories! They can truly make (or break) an outfit. They let you look at life through any lens you want – rosy, bright and bold, dark and gloomy. They can be playful and fun, or sultry and seductive. Most of the time they help you stand out in a crowd, but sunglasses (aka sunnies or shades) can also help you hide when you want to; maybe because you didn’t get enough sleep, don’t have makeup on or just want to people watch without being noticed (like Facebook in real life). And let’s not forget, they ultimately are protecting our eyes from harmful UV rays. I believe any fashionista would agree they are a must have, and the more options you have the better!
Since I like to have plenty of options with my sunnies, meaning I have more than I can count, I follow two simple rules…
1) Don’t overspend on every pair.
You don’t need to break the bank to have great sunglasses. Sure, investing in a classic pair of Maui Jim’s (my favorite designer brand) or Ray Ban’s that’ll last a lifetime and you’ll gladly wear forever is smart. They truly are the best quality and give the clearest perspective on the world. But balance is key. It’s nerve-wracking to wear pricey shades. Personally, I am always worried about scratching them, dropping them, or losing them – I have done it all, many times. So having plenty of cheaper options is important. I want to be able to grab a pair that enhance my outfit, match my mood and that I won’t worry about the whole time. My 3 favorite places to get reasonable sunglasses are Sunglass Warehouse, Francesca’s and Charming Charlie.
2) Take proper care of your shades and they’ll always be there for you.
Whether your sunnies cost a small fortune or the same as a pack of gum, taking care of them will extend their life. Carrying them in a proper case is a good start, so they don’t get scratched up in your purse, luggage, etc. It also will help keep the screws taut so they don’t get too lose, or break an arm. Keeping them safe at home is a must too. Avoid tossing them in a drawer or basket, so again, you can avoid scratching or breaking them. I personally LOVE my storage cases (picture below – similar here), which let me see everything easily, making it a snap to pick just the right pair! They are sleek enough to leave out in a room, or can easily be stacked and tucked away in a closet.
My favorite cases and storage containers are linked below.
(Regardless of how well you care for your shades, there is no doubt at some time you will need a mending kit, which you buy from your local drugstore or eye doctor. I recommend keeping one in your car, one at home and one in your suitcase. You’ll always be prepared!)
One / Two / Three / Four / Five / Six / Seven / Eight / Nine
I know it’s going to be a good day when the sun is so bright I need to wear shades, but I am also not afraid to rock them at night (now that song is stuck in your head too). I’ve made quite a spectacle of this topic (get it?!), but my love for sunglasses is real, and I know I am not alone in that. Today’s takeaway, shop for sunglasses that make you smile, no matter the weather or time of day, and remember to care for them like the delicate accessories they are, and you’ll always be able to change your perspective.
