Pantone Color of the Year: Living Coral

I think the people at Pantone could not have picked a better color as the 2019 “color of the year.” It’s Living Coral, and is just stunning. Coral is a color I have loved forever, in both fashion and home decor (I even used it in my bedroom). Even though the color alone needs no further explanation, you might wondering who are the people at Pantone and why do they have a color of the year? And how do they pick it? Fear not, I have answers!

The Pantone Color Institute is the business unit within Pantone that highlights top seasonal runway colors, forecasts global color trends, and advises companies on color for product and brand visual identity. Each year, for the past 20 years, they have selected a color of the year. This color reflects cultural moments and is pulled from a number of influences – such as nature, fashion, art, sports and film. This year, nature was a rather large focus. You, like me, might think “where in the world of nature have I seen coral?” The answer: in places you may not even remember. Leatrice Eisman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute reminds us that it’s not only in sunsets but also in coral reefs. Coral often times is a color found in places we would want to visit. In those tropical places, many coral reefs are in danger, and just like those should be preserved, Pantone wanted to nurture the color, and preserve it as well. Living Coral encourages a step out of the modern world and evokes lightheartedness, joy and optimism. The Pantone PR team uses words like “effervescent” and “vivifying” to describe their shade of coral.

Now that you know who the Pantone Color Institute is and why Living Coral is 2019’s color of the year, I wanted to help you incorporate it into your life. Trust me, the options are endless! From every day fashion, to high-end evening wear, to small office accessories and even furniture, you can pull this happy-go-lucky color into your life – in big ways if you are feeling bold and in small ways if you just need a little cheer in your life. Just like the people at Pantone look to the outside world for influence, the outside world looks to the people at Pantone too. This color is a big deal in the corporate world. Companies can pay extra to learn what the color is ahead of it’s launch time so they can prep merchandise. It influences a lot of what we see in stores, on runways and in design. (Including all of the coordinating colors that compliment it.) This makes it nice for all of us, as it makes it very easy to get our hands on the color and truly enjoy Living Coral.

  1. I’m sorry, I did read the post, but I just feel like there were still some other colors they could’ve chosen
