In fashion, it’s said that everything comes back in style. Whether we want it to or not, it’s pretty true. Every 20 years or so, we see a resurgence of things from the past. Sometimes it’s just a new play on a past trend, sometimes it’s the oringal back in full. If we lived through the original fashions lifestyle, we may not always love that. But if we didn’t, it’s often fun to step into the shoes (or pants or dress) from another time period. Nowadays, you don’t even have to rely on the trend to come fully back in style and back in stores, you can always find original pieces and still wear those!
Thrifting is a big deal right now, for multiple reasons. It’s cool and trendy, it’s often cheaper, and it’s sustainable, which is really important for fashion as we look to the future. Personally, I’ve never been a big thrift shopper. While I love vinatge furniture and accessories, and will spend hours in any antique store, the thought of wearing someone elses clothes weirds me out a little. But sometimes you find hidden gems in hidden stores and you say, “I have to have this!” That’s what happended when I was on a walk enjoying the beautiful murals in St. Petersburg, FL. I stumbled upon a really cool vintage clothing store and decided to take a look around. They of course had the traditional “yikes” fashion moments, but they had some beautiful pieces too, including this lovely lilac dress. It’s definitely from the 1980’s but I liked the classic lines and elegance of it, and I knew with modern accessories, I could bring it into the current century. Plus, I knew I’d likely be the only girl with this dress, and that always excites me.
So yes, eveyrthing comes back in style. Maybe it needs a little help along the way, a modern touch if you will, but you can guarantee in one way or another you’ll see old trends become new again. It gives new generations chances to experiment with those fashions, and to make them their own. Sometimes it’s a wow moment, sometimes it’s an “oh no” moment. But that’s fashion, it’s all about your own identity – make it fun and embrace what you love!
If you’ll be in St. Petersburg, you can check out one of their vintage claims to fame for yourself – the shop is called ARTpool. I highly recommend enjoying the murals around town too. You can see my St. Petersburg mural guide here.
