Live from the 2024 HCA Astra Awards

An awards show red carpet from home is a joy, but in person, it’s a total dream! I have been lucky enough to attend a few big awards shows now, and it’s fascinating to me how different not only each show is, but the red carpet itself. The SAG Awards were just buzzing with energy, the Grammys were so fashion forward, the Golden Globes were elegant and social and the Astra’s were friendly and familiar. A smaller show, like the Hollywood Creative Alliance’s Astra Awards (broken out into two nights – film and TV) allows for more time to talk with attendees, oogle their ensembles more and feel the real camaraderie that is Hollywood – it’s a very small town for being such a big city. I got to interview the stars as they walked the Astra’s red carpet and I loved hearing about their projects that they were their supporting, but you know me, I loved hearing about their looks even more. Here are my picks for best dressed at the 2024 HCA Astra Awards, and some fun background info behind each look!

To read more about my conversations with the stars and what I took away from the red carpet check out my article on LA Splash.

Garcelle Beauvais: Winner for Lifetime’s Black Girl Missing, Garcelle wanted to wear something that would make her feel powerful, and she said “what’s more powerful than a suit?” Hers had a pop of color and old Hollywood glamour.
Abigail Spencer, star of the new show Extended Family stood out as a presenter in pink.
Colman Domingo, Fantasia Barrino & Danielle Brooks: The Color Purple cast oozed style and had a great time together the whole night, and they took home multiple wins.
Trisha LaFache: Trisha, star of Jury Duty, wanted a look that felt very different from her Emmy’s ensemble and Halston sent a dress – and when Halston knocks, you answer. She gave us 70’s disco vibes.
Tia Carrere: Tia tugged at my fashion heart strings when she said she not only likes to mix high and low pieces, but she likes to wear vintage pieces so clothing gets another life, cutting down on fast fashion. This dress was a $30 vintage find!
Diana Maria Riva: Not only does Diana star in Dead To Me, she is a Hollywood activist. She founded Latinas Acting Out during the strike last year and works to build a community of Latina actresses and find them strong roles. Her dress was a piece she chose because she felt comfortable in it – just like she wants her fellow Latinas to feel in the industry.
Alex Wolff: This star of Oppenheimer, and HCA winner, shared with me that his characted in the film wears orange all the time, a costume choice to help his character stand out among the subdued science crowd. His look for the HCA’s was more subtle but still a standout suit and far from basic black.
Jenna Davis: The voice of the horror film doll, Megan, stood out in a bright red hi-lo dress. She said that her and her stylist really wanted to have a “moment” with this look. It was topped off with sparkly Betsey Johnson shoes.
Anjali Bhimani: The star of Ms. Marvel had a marvelous red carpet look. What made it even better was her jewels from her mom, who was visiting from India and on the red carpet with her, and her message – she said her dress is like armor that does not just make her feel powerful, but makes her feel empowered.
Layla Mohammadi: Everything about The Persian Version stars look was flawless. The vintage Dolce & Gabbana dressed was perfectly accessorized with a bold red lip and black hair-bow. Layla had this stunning gown for some time and was excited to have the perfect event to wear it to.
Hailee Steinfeld: Speaking of bows, they are having a big moment on the red carpet and this star of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse knows how to rock one. The back of her look was effortlessly chic.
Abby Ryder Fortson: The breakout star of Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret, brought the funky side a teenager should to a red carpet look. She was poised and polished well beyond her years, but her style was young and fresh. And she was so happy with her beautiful new Astra statuette.
Troy Kotsur: This talented actor and multi-award winner (he basically has them all) could not have been more sweet. His smile is so warm and charming and his beautiful suit was the perfect compliment to it. I asked how he chose his ensemble and he shared that black actually helps his hands stand out when he is signing. I had to share a picture of the signing in action so you could see how impactful his choice was.
The winning cast of The Boys, including Chace Crawford and Jack Quaid, all looked fantastic. Each person had their own unique ensemble, but they looked great as a group.
Dewayne Perkins: This star of The Blackening perfectly mixed street style and black tie. I loved the fringed sneakers!
